TMD Symptoms

The Woodlands and Houston, TX

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) has a number of symptoms that can occur in and around the jaw. Commonly, symptoms of TMD will begin small, with things such as clicking or popping noises around the jaw joint when opening and closing your mouth. These sounds may be accompanied by audible grinding noises when you bite or chew, as well as limited jaw movement and even occasional lockjaw.

If you are experiencing new or unusual noises in your jaw, it is best to schedule a neuromuscular dentistry evaluation with Houston dentist Dr. Scott Young as soon as possible. Left untreated these symptoms can quickly be joined by jaw pain and swelling, and may eventually lead to much larger oral and systemic health issues.

If you live in Houston or surrounding areas of Texas and are experiencing symptoms of TMD, please contact Woodlands Premier Dentistry or call (281) 367-5559 to schedule your examination with our neuromuscular dentist.

Diagnosing TMD

TMD can be tricky to diagnose because many of its symptoms occur outside of the immediate area of the jaw. These can include:

  • Chronic headaches
  • Ear pain or nasal pressure without the presence of infection
  • Visual disturbances
  • Generalized facial or head pain
  • Back, shoulder, and neck aches
  • Postural changes
  • Uneven tooth wear
  • Digestive disturbances

To diagnose TMD, Houston neuromuscular dentist Dr. Scott Young uses both hands-on and diagnostic tools. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of TMD, only a neuromuscular dental evaluation can determine the root cause of your problem. Unfortunately, without this type of evaluation, TMD is commonly misdiagnosed and proper TMJ treatment options that can restore alignment and comfort are never explored.
