What is TMJ?
Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) is the name given to a group of disorders impacting the proper alignment of the jaw. Alternately known as TMD, these conditions are often most responsive to neuromuscular dentistry treatments.
What are the primary symptoms of TMJ?
Symptoms of TMJ include:
- Noises in the jaw such as clicking or popping
- Pain or swelling around the jaw joint
- Limited jaw movement or lockjaw
Other symptoms of this condition include chronic headaches, ear and sinus pressure, and neck and backaches. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms – particularly in combination – please call The Woodlands neuromuscular dentist Dr. Scott Young at (281) 367-5559 to schedule a treatment consultation.
Why does TMJ cause headaches?
Headaches, pain in the ears, and pressure in the sinuses and eyes can be caused by TMJ because jaw misalignment places pressure on the trigeminal nerve. This nerve is responsible for a majority of sensation in the face and, when irritated, can send pain signals to nearly every part of the head and neck. The most effective way to eliminate this pain is to relieve pressure on the trigeminal nerve.
How is TMJ treated?
Dr. Young takes a combined approach to treating TMJ. This may include:
- Muscle relaxation with a TENS unit
- Customized orthotics
- Pure Power Mouthguard
- Dental restorations
The best way to learn which of these can help relieve your symptoms is through a one-on-one consultation with our experienced neuromuscular dentist.
