That’s right: resolve to chew gum for 10 minutes after every meal and snack. Researchers from the University of Groningen in Holland have recently found that chewing sugar-free gum for up to 10 minutes following eating can remove more than 100 million bacteria from the mouth. However, 10 minutes is key in this finding –chewing for periods longer than 10 minutes allows all removed bacteria, plus a little extra, to be re-deposited onto teeth and gums.
Researchers were quick to point out that only sugar-free gum is capable of removing bacteria. Sugary gums have the opposite effect and can encourage tooth decay. Researchers for this study did not look at naturally sweetened gums such as those containing xylitol. However, significant evidence suggests xylitol may be nearly as effective as fluoride in the prevention of tooth decay. This can make choosing a sugar-free gum with xylitol the most effective solution for fresh breath and clean teeth.
