The Woodlands and Houston, TX
According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, over 42,000 new cases of oral cancer are diagnosed in the United States every year. Tragically, an average of one person dies every hour in the U.S. due to complications with oral cancer – a type of cancer that can actually be easily treated when caught early on.
Symptoms of oral cancer include:
- Ulcers or white spots on soft oral tissue
- A persistent cough
- Chronic bad breath
- Swollen neck lymph nodes
- Pain in the mouth or throughout the face
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please call The Woodlands dentist Dr. Scott Young at (281) 367-5559 to schedule an examination and determine if oral cancer is present.
While anyone can develop oral cancer, here are two very important statistics to bear in mind:
- 80% of new oral cancer diagnoses occur in people who use tobacco products
- 70% of new oral cancer diagnoses occur in people who are heavy drinkers
Combined, alcohol and tobacco use are the single largest and most easily preventable causes of oral cancer.
There are myriad reasons to stop using tobacco and to limit alcohol consumption and oral cancer is certainly among them. This April, as we consider oral cancer prevention, looking to curb our own dangerous behavior offers the most effective way to help put an end to this often preventable disease.
If you believe you are experiencing the beginning symptoms of oral cancer, please contact Woodlands Premier Dentistry to schedule an examination right away. Dr. Young serves The Woodlands and all surrounding areas of Texas.
