Advice from Your Houston General Dentist: How and When to Floss

The Woodlands and Houston, TX

Flossing is essential for preventing cavities and gum disease, and maintaining optimal oral health. However, while flossing once or twice a day takes almost no time, surprisingly few people do it consistently.

Some claim this is due to the difficulty they experience flossing. Others suggest it’s just too easy to fall out of the habit. But when you consider the correlation between oral and systemic health, getting into the habit of flossing is less a good idea and more an absolute imperative.

The Proper Way to Floss

The best way to get into the habit of flossing is to do it at the same time every day. You can floss before or after you brush your teeth every morning, and night and experiment to determine if you prefer the pre- or post-brush option. Either way is fine.

You need to use a clean section of floss in between each tooth and to floss from the crown to the root. Be sure to get underneath the gum line. Bleeding is to be expected when you first start. This will go away with continued flossing.   During your regularly scheduled dental visits our hygienists would be happy to show you proper flossing technique. We can also make suggestions on the type of floss that is best for your teeth to help ensure ultimate comfort and optimal health.
