The Scoop on Conscious Sedation

The Woodlands and Houston, TX

Do you dread visits to the dentist? If so, you’re not alone, but that doesn’t mean you have to let fear keep you from getting the smile makeover you desire. Conscious sedation can be an ideal solution for those like you, who suffer from dental anxiety. Used along with local anesthetics and pain medications, conscious sedation ensures a relaxed, pain-free dental experience, even for people who are so fearful that they put off, or even refuse, vital oral health care. Our knowledgeable sedation dentist, Dr. Scott Young, can help you decide if conscious sedation is a good option for you.

What is Conscious Sedation?

Conscious sedation involves the skilled use of drugs called antianxiety agents and sedatives, to make you feel sleepy and relaxed, but you will not lose consciousness. You will remain awake and responsive, and breathe normally. These drugs can be given in pill form or as a gas, nitrous oxide, which is especially useful because it wears off quickly, has few side effects, and is safe to use in patients of all ages.

You should tell Dr. Young about any other medications you take, and any drug allergies you have. He will also need to be aware of your significant medical conditions and of any changes in your health since your last visit.
