It is commonplace in my practice to see and treat patients with severe tetracycline staining. Many of you may be wondering what in the world is tetracycline, how does it stain your teeth, and what is the treatment?  Well we are going to answer these questions now as we look at the case of Tim B.

Tetracycline is an antibiotic that is related to the antibiotics doxycycline and minocycline.  Tetracycline stains are teeth discolorations that are caused by taking this antibiotic as a child or when tooth formation is occurring.  It can also be caused in an individual if their mother took the antibiotic during pregnancy.  The staining is embedded within the dentin (intrinsic staining) causing the teeth to appear a dark yellow, gray, or even in severe cases a bluish color.  Because the staining is deep within the teeth, traditional teeth whitening of tetracycline stained teeth is usually not successful.  This leaves many individuals embarrassed or frustrated with the appearance of their smile.

With the advanced techniques and procedures now in dentistry, there is now a solution for those like  Tim that are tired of hesitating to smile because of tetracycline staining.  Tim came to the office and was open about the fact that the staining of his teeth really impacted how he would not smile in pictures, social settings, etc.  In addition, he stated that he had “worn “the incisal edges of his teeth from past grinding.  He asked if there were any options that would allow him to smile freely and without reservation.  Tim was the perfect candidate for porcelain veneers!  These are small, thin pieces of porcelain that could be bonded over his existing teeth giving him a natural, healthy smile. They could cover both the staining and existing wear on his teeth.

Tim was excited and made the commitment to restore his smile.  In just two short weeks, we were able to give Tim a fabulous, natural-looking smile that he could always be proud of.  Tim is always smiling and now looks 10 years younger.  If you are suffering from tetracycline staining and would like to discuss enhancing your smile with porcelain veneers give our office a call and we will be happy to set up a consultation for you.
