Questions About Tooth Whitening
Houston, The Woodlands, Kingwood, Spring, and Conroe, Texas
What tooth whitening system do you use?
Woodlands Premier Dentistry is proud to offer the Zoom!® Advanced Power tooth whitening system. As one of the best-known, most highly recommended professional tooth whitening systems, Zoom!® provides visible whitening in a single office visit.
What are the benefits of professional tooth whitening over at-home tooth whitening?
At-home tooth whitening kits do not offer the same strength of treatment that professional whitening treatments offer. In addition, professional tooth whitening can reach areas that at-home tooth whitening kits fail to affect:
- Area near the gums
- Between teeth
- Back side of teeth
- Biting edges of teeth
Professional tooth whitening also achieves visible changes in one office visit. At-home whitening kits require two weeks or more of treatment twice daily, requiring you to remember to apply strips or a tray, and also restricting your movements to a location where you can remove the gel or paste at the required time.
Do tooth whitening products affect dental installations such as fillings and crowns?
Two types of material provide tooth-colored fillings and crowns: porcelain and composite. Porcelain reacts the way your teeth do, both to staining foods and to whitening treatments. If you have porcelain fillings, inlays or onlays, crowns, or veneers, they will whiten as your teeth do. If you have composite fillings or crowns, however, their color will not change with the use of either professional or at-home whitening treatments.
Does tooth whitening work on all natural teeth?
Your natural teeth may be stained in one of two ways: extrinsically or intrinsically. Extrinsically stained teeth are teeth discolored by external sources, such as tobacco, caffeinated drinks, or various foods. Intrinsically stained teeth may have been discolored from chemicals, decay, or even genetics. Professional tooth whitening will work on virtually all extrinsically stained teeth. Intrinsically discolored teeth, however, may not respond even to professional tooth whitening and may require the application of porcelain veneers to appear whiter.
How long does tooth whitening last?
The effects of professional tooth whitening last for varying amounts of time, depending on the individual’s dietary habits and tobacco use. At Woodlands Premier Dentistry, we provide take-home trays to help enhance and prolong the whiteness achieved by professional tooth whitening.
