Tooth Crown Work

Houston, the Woodlands, Kingwood, Spring, and Conroe, Texas

A tooth crown is often needed to protect a tooth that has been broken or to cover a dental implant post in order to look and perform like a real tooth. When there is enough remaining healthy tooth to affix the dental crown to, a dental implant is not needed. Often, if the broken tooth has exposed the soft portion that covers the nerve and allowed it to become a cavity, endodontic< surgery may be necessary before the dental crown can be placed.

Porcelain Tooth Crowns

At Woodlands Premier Dentistry, Houston cosmetic dentist Dr. Scott Young only uses porcelain dental crowns. Some dental practices use composite crowns over a metal base, which can create problems when the metal expands and contracts. It may also create the appearance of discoloration if the metal shows through the composite. An all-porcelain crown can help avoid these pitfalls and provide a natural- and healthy-looking tooth instead of an obvious crown.

Other benefits of porcelain crowns include:

  • They can be tinted and shaped to look exactly like natural teeth
  • They respond to teeth whitening like natural teeth do
  • They more easily enable Dr. Young to detect structural problems in the underlying tooth

How Tooth Crowns Work

A tooth crown differs from other dental installations in that it completely encases the tooth. Porcelain veneers only cover the front of the tooth and sometimes the biting edge. Other restorations, such as fillings and porcelain inlays and onlays, cover only the part of the tooth which has been damaged. Because a tooth crown covers the entire tooth, the tooth itself must be shaped and some of the enamel removed to allow the crown to fit over it while still correctly interacting with its neighboring and opposing teeth.

A tooth crown may be necessary for a:

  • Broken tooth
  • Cracked tooth
  • Decayed tooth
  • Tooth with a damaged root
