Sedation Dentistry: What to Expect

Houston, the Woodlands, Kingwood, Spring, and Conroe, Texas

Many people dread visits to the dentist.  They may put off, or even avoid entirely, having dental care that they need. If you experience this common type of anxiety, or dental apprehension, you may wish to consider sedation dentistry. Dr. Scott Young and his team can help you decide if sedation dentistry will help you overcome your fears and relax during dental procedures.

Oral Sedation

You and Dr. Young may decide that oral sedation is best for you. If so, you will take a sedative drug (i.e., a pill) about an hour before your procedure, to give the drug time to get into your system. The sedative will make you feel calm and relaxed, even sleepy. But you will still be mostly awake during the procedure, and you will still be able to communicate with Dr. Young.

With Oral Sedation:

  • You will be mostly awake but very relaxed
  • If you drift into sleep you can be awakened with a light shake
  • You will not be completely unconscious & will breathe normally
  • You will be able to respond to Dr. Young’s questions and instructions
  • You may be groggy for a few hours after your procedure
  • You will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment

Inhaled Sedation

You and Dr. Young may decide that inhaled sedation is best for you. Right before your procedure, you will inhale a gas mixture—nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” plus oxygen—through a mask over your nose. The gas works quickly, making you feel calm and relaxed. But you will still be mostly aware of the procedure, and you will be able to communicate with Dr. Young.

With Inhaled Sedation:

  • You will be mostly awake and relaxed
  • You will not be completely unconscious & will breathe normally
  • You will be able to respond to Dr. Young’s questions and instructions
  • You may not remember much about the procedure
  • You will recover quickly, with no residual grogginess and no side effects
  • You may drive yourself to and from your appointment
