Porcelain Fillings
Houston, the Woodlands, Kingwood, Spring, and Conroe, Texas
Porcelain fillings are one type of tooth colored filling used by Houston cosmetic dentist Dr. Scott Young. Porcelain is particularly desirable as a tooth filling because it is:
- Durable
- "Invisible"
- Chemically Stable
Benefits of Porcelain Fillings
The porcelain used in dental fixtures is an extremely durable and compact type of ceramic that is as hard as or harder than natural tooth enamel. When correctly fit and affixed to teeth, a porcelain filling can last as long as the tooth to which it is adhered.
In addition to being a very durable material, porcelain can be tinted to virtually any shade and may even be tinted in multiple shades with variations, unlike composite which comes in many shades, but is a comparatively flat material with less brilliance and luster. Porcelain fillings can be colored to match your natural tooth color to the point of being virtually invisible unless closely examined.
Porcelain is not prone to expanding and contracting under the influence of extreme temperatures. Unlike metal fillings which can expand and contract, slowly weakening the structure of the filled tooth over time, porcelain fillings will remain the same size and shape, preserving the strength of your natural tooth.
Porcelain Fillings vs. Composite Fillings
While both porcelain and composite fillings are referred to as tooth colored fillings, they do differ somewhat. As mentioned, composite fillings come in a limited number of shades and do not vary in tint within the composite material.
Both porcelain and composite fillings are superior options to metal amalgam fillings, which may leak harmful traces of mercury into surrounding tissue. Porcelain and composite fillings do not contain mercury, and they are more difficult to distinguish from natural enamel.
When deciding on a cosmetic dentist, you should be aware that simply using porcelain or composite fillings may not automatically imply that your filling will look like a natural part of your tooth. Creating natural-looking dental fixtures requires the skills of a talented and trained cosmetic dentist, such as Dr. Young.
