Dental Hygiene and Teeth Cleaning
Houston, the Woodlands, Kingwood, Spring, and Conroe, Texas
You probably already know that dental hygiene is not only an important part of your oral health, but also an important part of your overall health. Your ability to eat what you want greatly affects your quality of life, and the inability to eat what you want, or oral discomfort, can make more than just chewing unpleasant.
For this reason, it is important to understand not only that oral hygiene matters, but to know how to properly care for your teeth and gums.
Brushing and Flossing
Brushing your teeth and flossing are the most important daily steps you can take to keep your teeth and gums healthy and functioning correctly. Keep the following in mind while brushing:
- Brush your teeth twice a day or more
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid removing enamel
- Brush gently, but firmly
- Brush all the surfaces of your teeth, including the front, back, and biting edge
- Brush thoroughly, with the bristles at a 45 degree angle to your teeth
- Pay special attention to your hard-to-reach back teeth
- Brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth, where bacterial is often forgotten about
If you think that your teeth and gums are safe because you brush your teeth twice a day, think again. Flossing is as important to your oral health as brushing is, because it removes food and plaque where they are most likely to build up and cause problems: between your teeth.
- Floss at least once daily
- Gently work the floss between your teeth by sliding it back and forth
- Do not snap the floss down between your teeth, as it may damage your gums
- If traditional floss string is difficult for you to work with, invest in disposable floss picks
If necessary, use an antibacterial mouthwash to minimize bad breath and enhance the benefits of brushing and flossing.
Dental Cleanings
You may think that brushing and flossing daily is enough to keep your teeth and gums healthy without the intervention of a dentist. However, dental cleanings are an important part of your regular oral hygiene routine. Dental cleanings remove the buildup of tartar that causes gum disease.
Additionally, regularly visiting your general dentist can keep you informed of changes you may not have noticed, chips in your teeth that may require repair, or cavities, which can develop even under strict brushing and flossing.
If you notice any change in your oral health, including broken or chipped teeth, gum discoloration or sensitivity, or loose teeth, you should schedule an appointment with your Houston family dentist Dr. Scott Young immediately to prevent complications.
We have two hygienists that hold masterships form the JP Institute. The JP institute is located in Carlsbad, CA and trains hygienists on the latest research and techniques for treating periodontal disease.
